Field Day and Cheese Tasting at Nubians North
Friday July 25 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
All Indigenous growers, land stewards and community members are welcome to attend this field day free of charge! Please use the coupon code GOAT2025 when filling out the registration form to receive free admission.
Join us for a guided tour of Nubians North, a licensed dairy goat operation in Northern Ontario that’s home to a thriving herd of approximately 800 purebred Nubian goats, including approximately 200 kids! What began with the purchase of three does over a decade ago has grown into a passion-fueled enterprise producing some of the richest, highest quality goat milk in the region—milk that’s transformed into award-winning cheese by their local partner, Fromagerie Kapuskoise.
This Field Day offers a unique chance to experience the day-to-day realities of managing a large-scale dairy goat operation with a deep respect for animals and tradition. Hosts will share their reflections on raising goats with intention and care, from herd management decisions to the emotional complexities that come with livestock farming.
Participants will learn:
- Why Nubians? A deep dive into the breed’s character, challenges, and exceptional milk quality
- What it takes to manage herd health and productivity on a commercial scale
- How a strong partnership with a cheesemaker enhances sustainability and product quality
- The realities (and rewards) of working with high-maintenance but lovable goats
Cheese Tasting Included! Enjoy a selection of artisan goat cheeses made with Nubians North milk and crafted by Fromagerie Kapuskoise. A delicious opportunity to experience the rich, smooth flavours that make Nubian milk so special.
Biosecurity Note: As this is a working dairy operation, all participants will be required to follow biosecurity protocols. Protective boot covers and other necessary equipment will be provided on-site.
Come ready with your questions and curiosities—and leave with a new appreciation for one of humanity’s oldest animal companions.
About the Host:
Greg Garner, Nubians North: Greg Garner is the founder and owner of Nubians North, a prominent purebred Nubian dairy goat farm located in Porquis Junction, Northern Ontario. Alongside his wife, Cheryl, Greg has expanded their operation from just three goats to a thriving herd of nearly 800. Nubians North is currently the only commercial goat milk farm in Northern Ontario licensed to both produce and transport milk. Greg’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and animal welfare is evident in the farm’s focus on producing high-quality milk. Nubian goats are known for their rich, sweet milk, which is ideal for artisanal cheese production. The milk’s high butterfat and protein content, along with its A2 protein composition, make it more digestible for many people, including those with lactose intolerance . With a background in agricultural studies from the University of Guelph Ridgetown College, Greg combines academic knowledge with hands-on experience to lead Nubians North in supplying premium goat milk to local and southern niche markets.
This field day is supported by funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario.
