Millers & Distillers: Small Grains Processing in Ontario
Wednesday March 15, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Looking for opportunities beyond the elevator? Join us to hear from two Ontario businesses offering niche opportunities for small grains processing in the province.
Mike Hook joins us from Last Straw Distillery, an award-winning craft distillery in Vaughn. He’ll share about Last Straw, in particular about their single farm whisky program, which is focused on working directly with regenerative small grains growers to source grain. These are distilled separately, to make whiskies that are 100% from a single farm, and tell the story of the farm, farmer, and regenerative ag.
Kevin Stewart from Ottawa Valley Grain Products knows both sides of the business, being both farmer and miller. OVGP’s main crop they work with is barley, cleaning and dehulling barley to make pot and pearled barley found in soups and stews. They also make whole grain barley flour which is a specialty high nutrient flour. OVGP also works with other grains such as wheat, rye, spelt, red fife and oats, and is expanding their capacity and the crops they can work with.
Come on out to learn about the local processing sector and how your farm may be able to get directly involved!
