Lessons from the Breadlab: Participatory Plant Breeding
Wednesday March 6 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Plant breeders put a lot of effort into developing new, high quality varieties, but have you ever wondered who tells them what to breed for? And how do we decide what makes a quality variety? These are some of the questions being asked at Washington State University’s Breadlab, where researchers and plant breeders work closely with farmers and bakers through participatory plant breeding (PPB).
Join us on March 6th to hear stories from Robin Morgan, crop science PhD student and plant breeder at the Breadlab. Robin will challenge assumptions about the plant breeding process and share lessons he has gleaned through his seed work at home in rural Italy and with the Breadlab about working with farmers to shift priorities in grain breeding – bringing regional culture, flavour, and nutrition back into the loaf.
Register today to join us for a hit of mid-Winter inspiration and some great discussion!
Speakers: Robin Morgan (Breadlab), Michelle Carkner and Dr. Martin Entz (University of Manitoba), Alison Squires (Upland Organics)
