DESCRIPTION:  \nPerennial Pastures with Sarah Flack: Session Two\nThe “graziers tool box” includes using  livestock as well as other methods to improve pastures and avoid pasture pitfalls.  Topics will include stocking rate\, stock densities\, trampling\, variable regrowth periods\, post grazing residual\, variable pre grazing heights\, soil amendments\, seed and more. Each of these “tools” can be used to change the pasture plant species composition\, pasture productivity & quality\, soil health\, and livestock performance.   \nThere will be time for a break\, as well as to ask your grazing questions directly to Sarah during this webinar. \nThis is an excellent opportunity to learn from an expert for farmers who are familiar with managed grazing.. Note that Sarah Flack is doing a session on January 17th\, which will be more introductory than this session. You can attend either of both\, and do not need to attend the first to attend the second. \nAbout the speaker \nSarah is an author\, consultant\, and speaker who specializes in grass-based livestock farming systems. Sarah takes a practical approach in applying the science of agronomy and grazing\, combined with farm business planning\, to allow farmers to make well informed decisions.  Her goal is to help create more farms with successful grass-based management systems\, empowering farmers to create positive change for pastures\, soils\, livestock\, and farmers’ quality of life.  \nHer unique approach is based on what she learned while consulting\, teaching and writing on the topic over several decades. She later studied Holistic Planned Grazing\, Management Intensive Grazing and the science of pasture management in graduate school. Sarah works with beef\, sheep\, goat and dairy farmers including both organic and non-organic.  More recently\, Sarah’s focus has been working with 100% grass-fed dairy farmers and she has been participating in several research\, consulting and writing projects on that topic. \nSarah is author of The Art and Science of Grazing\,  Organic Dairy Production and co author of The Organic Dairy Handbook\, Vermont Grass-Based Beef Profitability: Lessons and Budgets\, and Transitioning to Organic Dairy and most recently\, The Grass-Based Dairy Production Manual as well as numerous articles. \nShe is passionate about helping farmers find ways to be financially viable while carefully stewarding their land and livestock.  She lives on the farm she grew up on where she is surrounded by pastures\, wetlands\, forests\, livestock and wildlife. \nThis event is held in partnership with Farmers for Climate Solutions \nThis event is an OSCIA-recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for farmers with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Grazing category. DESCRIPTION:At this month’s Seed Meet-Up\, we’d like to keep the conversations going which we had at our Seed Growers Consultation at the EFAO conference. We were asking about if you could have one wish (big or small) answered that would help support you to achieve your seed work what would that be!  \nWe’d love to delve deeper into the topics you brought up around seed cleaning\, making connections with others doing seed work\, marketing needs\, import and export challenges\, and what resources are available.  \nWhat are ways we can do this? Who needs to be involved? What are key ingredients for this to happen? Who can we learn from to do this? Any low hanging fruits we can harvest together soon? What are some fruits that still need to ripen but might be ready next year? \nJoin for our informal monthly meetup with other seed growers to talk about your questions and ideas about seedkeeping and seed production. As always we ask seed growers and seed curious folks to bring your seed questions and areas of contemplation and we’ll work together to try to address as many as we can. This Meet-Up offers a place for us to share our seed producing knowledge and to hear about upcoming seed events. Already running one but struggling with business planning? If you’re ready to start planning your farm business\, this course is for you! \n\nCourse Overview\nThis ten week\, comprehensive course will walk you through the steps to write a detailed farm plan for your farm business. SUMMARY:Holistic Management Course - 10 Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Is your farm business struggling to make a profit? Are your land\, water and ecosystems in need of rejuvenation? Do you struggle with the farm-work-life balance? Are you wondering about how you can pass on your farm and legacy? \nHolistic Management helps farmers discover tools to make better\, more informed decisions to reach your family and farm goals. \nThis course will be held over 10 webinars starting in November 2023 – with a break for winter holidays – and ending on February 1st of 2024. The course consists of 10 x 2 hour online sessions from 7 – 9pm on Thursday evenings. The course will cover the main elements of Holistic Management: \n\nGoal setting\,\nFinancial Planning\,\nDecision Testing\,\nMonitoring (decisions and ecosystem processes) and\nPlanned Grazing.\n\nHolistic Management has been helping farm and ranch families make better decisions for their people\, their land and their finances for over 50 years.  This course can serve as an introduction to Holistic Management for those new to HM.  It will also provide an opportunity for review and refinement for those already familiar with HM. \nParticipants will have access to digital Holistic Management manuals for goal setting\, decision testing\, financial planning\, biological monitoring and planned grazing. Recordings of the sessions will be sent to all registrants after they take place. \nThe first sessions will explore goal setting and decision testing\, the next sessions will go through the financial planning process and the final sessions will cover monitoring\, grazing planning and review goal setting and decision testing after participants have had a chance to use their holistic goal and test decisions during the previous weeks.  During the course participants will have been able to develop an initial holistic goal\, a draft financial plan and\, depending on the operation\, a grazing plan or crop or garden plan. \nCourse dates:\n\n2023: Nov 9\, 16\, 23 and Dec 7\, 14\n\n 2024: Jan 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 and Feb 1\n\nNote: There is a minimum and maximum number of participants we can accommodate\, and running the course will depend on registration numbers. Prices listed are per farm team. \nScholarship Option:\nHolistic Management has proven very helpful for farmers in improving the financial situation of their farms.  IF you would like to take this course BUT the cost is a barrier\, please contact Tony directly at tonymcquail@gmail.com about this option. \nAbout the Facilitator: \nTony McQuail bought his farm near Lucknow\, Ontario in 1973. He and his wife\, Fran\, have run a diversified organic farm raising livestock\, a small apple orchard and operated a community supported garden. McQuail was an early adopter of rotational grazing and has decades of experience in pasture management and fencing systems. At Meeting Place Organic Farm they raise grass fed and finished beef\, pastured pork and pastured poultry and have done some experimenting with cocktail cover crops. They do much of their farming with work horses and provide training in this skill to apprentices. They took a played out crop farm from approximately 1.5 soil organic matter to 3.5 to 7% organic matter moving CO2 from the atmosphere into the soil. The McQuails have transferred the farm operation to their daughter Katrina and continue to be actively involved in it. \nThis course is an OSCIA-recognized On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for applicants with approved Rotational Grazing Systems projects. Participants must attend at least 8 out of the 10 course sessions live in order to count this as a KSE. Questions about OFCAF should be directed to OFCAF@ontariosoilcrop.org

DESCRIPTION:Let’s chat about seed work over lunch! \nHave a question to share as you harvest and clean your seed? Interested in what other seedkeepers and seed growers are working on at this time of year? Let’s come in from the fields for our informal monthly meetup with other seed growers to talk about your questions and ideas about seedkeeping and seed production. Seed growers and seed curious folks\, bring your seed questions and areas of contemplation and we’ll work together to try to address as many as we can. This Meetup offers a place for us to share our seed producing knowledge and to hear about upcoming seed events. As always\, our goal is to encourage each other to grow a great diversity of seeds of high quality and in the quantities growers need. \nThis Seed Grower MeetUp is hosted monthly free for EFAO members\, and is open to non-members too!! Growers of all experience levels and at all points in the process of seed saving and production are welcome.
