SUMMARY:Human-Scale Farming at Carrick Seeds
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful field day dedicated to integrating appropriate technology with crop varieties adapted to our environmental constraints\, culinary goals\, and techniques within a hand-worked\, family-scale food system. Carrick Seeds is a family-run company that grows and sells seeds from their farm in Bruce County\, Ontario. Theo\, alongside his brother Andre\, will lead us through this informative tour\, sharing their expertise in garden permaculture\, seed production\, small-scale field crops\, and small-scale equipment. Their knowledge and passion will inspire you to implement sustainable farming practices on your own farm. \nEvent Highlights: \n\nFocus on Seed Saving and Staple Crops: Engage in discussions about the cultivation of staple crops such as small grains\, dry legumes\, corn\, amaranth\, and root vegetables. Learn how these crops are adapted to specific environmental constraints and culinary goals. Visit the isolated seed gardens to learn about seed production.\nEquipment Showcase: Get a hands-on demonstration of various farming equipment\, including garden tools\, threshing and seed cleaning equipment\, and cooking and preserving tools. Explore the tools and techniques essential for growing and saving seed alongside food production. Embrace human-scaled technology—tools that meet human needs without perpetuating ecological problems. This approach prioritizes simplicity and sustainability as the family continually works to end their dependence on fossil fuels\, plastics\, and electricity.\nCooking and Food Storage Technologies: Understand how cooking technologies and the ecology influence crop selection. Demonstrations will include cooking and preserving equipment\, such as an outdoor rocket stove\, that impact our culinary practices\nTour: Enjoy a visit to our seed gardens\, with one located about 800 meters away along a tractor lane\, and equipment demonstrations in our barn.\n\nAccessibility information \nA washroom is available in the house for your convenience. \nIn order to make our training and community building events accessible to all farmers and future farmers in Ontario\, EFAO strives to reduce financial barriers for registration by using a Pay What You Can model. DESCRIPTION:This in-person event is part of the Ignatius Farm New Farmer Training Program – a collaboration between Ignatius Jesuit Centre\, EFAO\, Everdale and the National Farmers Union – Ontario.  \nJoin us in beautiful Field\, ON (55km north of North Bay) for another Field Day in Northern Ontario! We’ll start the day at Restless Ravens Homestead\, have a short break and then head down the road to finish the day at Kaila’s Flower Farm. \nAbout the hosts \nRestless Ravens Homestead \nRun by Dan Weiler and Aimée Hodgins in the backwoods of Field\, ON\, Restless Ravens Homestead is a small-scale ecological farm utilizing techniques like no-till\, permaculture\, companion planting\, polyculture\, multi-sowing\, cover cropping\, vermicomposting\, land stewardship\, and biodynamic practices. Though only operating their current farm since 2019\, both have extensive farming backgrounds\, with Dan having worked on various farms and Aimée\, a 4th-generation farmer\, deeply devoted to studying plants for over 10 years. They produce a wide variety of farmed and value-added products\, including livestock\, meat\, seeds\, produce\, eggs\, plants\, herbal products\, CSH boxes\, workshops\, and mentorship programs. They also run a farm stand\, seed library\, and are developing a farm store. Their focus is on herbs\, seeds\, plants\, value-added products\, education\, and self-sufficiency. Aimée\, previously a board member for the Mangalitsa Breed Organization\, brings expertise in pig farming. The homestead thrives on reclaimed\, untouched farmland without infrastructure\, electricity\, or water lines\, facing rugged Northern Ontario terrain and harsh winters. They take pride in creating a sustainable\, hyperlocal\, and ecologically respectful farm\, working harmoniously with the earth and their community. \nKaila’s Flower Farm \nKaila\, a full-time farmer\, specializes in selling cut flowers through a small bouquet CSA and custom arrangements for baby showers\, anniversaries\, and small weddings. While keeping the flower business small\, she also engages in various farming activities\, including growing seeds\, raising livestock\, and selling beef\, pork\, chicken\, and eggs. Kaila dedicates much of her day to home dairy and food preservation\, ensuring her farm operates as a self-sustaining ecosystem where livestock supports both her family and the soil. Initially focused on selling food\, Kaila discovered that flowers are more rewarding and help sustain her homesteading lifestyle. \n  \n  \nAgenda \n12:00-12:30 PM: Welcome and introductions. \n12:30-2:00 PM: Tour of Restless Ravens Homestead. Learn about off-grid fencing setup and pasture-raised Mangalitsa pigs and harvest your own medicinal tea blend! \n2:00-2:30 PM: Snack break (bring your own snack; herbal tea provided). \n2:30-4:00 PM: Tour of Kaila’s Flower Farm. We will start with a discussion of farm beginnings and gardening experiences and visit the barn to see the animals and hear the farm history. Then we’ll explore the compost system\, gardens\, perennial hedge\, crop garden\, memorial garden\, and chicken tractors and visit the dairy cattle\, male goats\, and rotational grazing practices. Then we will walk through the back pasture with the female dairy goats and the milkweed field (registered as a monarch waystation) and have a small stop at pigs. We will end the day at the flower studio for a possible mason jar flower arrangement activity if time allows. \nPreparation \nAs always please come prepared for any weather and bugs. This event is held 100% outdoors! \nParking information \nPlease park near the farm store. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Farming with Family at Bear Root Gardens
DESCRIPTION:At Bear Root Gardens\, it’s not just farmers Kate and Pat that run the seed-growing operation. Their two young kids are also very involved in all aspects of the operation – from planting to seed saving to crunching down on delicious veggies. \n“The Girls are the most important part of the gardens. Their endless imagination and curiosity in nature makes Bear Root Gardens a magical place.” \nBear Root Gardens offers locally-adapted seeds that thrive in Northern conditions\, producing strong yields and resisting pests and diseases. Their unique varieties have been showcased in the Seed Demonstration Gardens\, and they are longtime participants in the Bauta program contributing seed\, knowledge and enthusiasm to our seed community. \nIn 2021\, the Joslins had to adapt to a new reality\, when their older child was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor and required surgery\, chemotherapy\, and a long road of rehabilitation. Maggie now uses a wheelchair to get around\, and the Joslins have found creative ways to ensure she can be fully involved in their family farming and outdoor adventures. \nCome visit the beautiful small town of Verona to celebrate and connect about farming with kids\, accessibility on farms\, and small scale seed production. Bring your kids! This field day will be fun for the whole family. \nIn order to make our training and community building events accessible to all farmers and future farmers in Ontario\, EFAO strives to reduce financial barriers for registration by using a Pay What You Can model. SUMMARY:Seed Demonstration Garden Tour & Vegetable Variety Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour and tasting to learn about the incredible work of regional seed stewards! \nFertile Ground Farm is partnering with EFAO again this year as the host site for the Vegetable Seed Demonstration Gardens. The goal of these demonstration gardens is to serve as a hub to showcase and evaluate varieties of interest for ecological market gardeners and growers that can contribute to a regional seed system by being grown here in Ontario. These gardens are sites for exploring and showcasing different vegetable varieties\, growing crop varieties for conservation in partnership with Seeds of Diversity\, and trialing heat tolerant lettuce varieties and carrot varieties in collaboration with farmers across the province and Canada. \nThe farm is showcasing over 40 vegetable varieties that have been bred\, regionally adapted\, and stewarded by local farmers and seed producers or are open-pollinated varieties that can be adapted to our region. Local seed is the basis for truly local food\, and farmers and growers in our region have been saving\, selecting\, and breeding interesting\, resilient\, and storied seeds for generations. \nJoin us for this garden tour and tasting to learn about these varieties\, who grows them\, and what makes them so special and how you can incorporate them into your gardens so that we can all enjoy the diversity on our plates! \nThe farm tour begins at 10:30am. Participants are invited to bring a bagged lunch which can be eaten alongside some catered snacks that showcase the varieties grown in the gardens. There will also be variety tastings prepared by Jon Rennie of odd duck wine & provisions\, where you can help pick which varieties in the trials taste the best! \nAfter touring the Demonstration Gardens\, those who would like to stay on and have a tour of the Fertile Ground Farm are invited to do so. \nFor more information about the Seed Demonstration Gardens visit our Seed program page. \nIn order to make our training and community building events accessible to all farmers and future farmers in Ontario\, EFAO strives to reduce financial barriers for registration by using a Pay What You Can model. SUMMARY:Living Soils Workshop at Grenville Farm
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is offered in partnership with the National Farmers Union Ontario – North. \nJoin us for an immersive one-day workshop at Grenville Farms\, led by the renowned soil ecology expert Vivian Kaloxilos from DocTerre. This workshop will delve into the fascinating world of living soils\, focusing on two main topics: \n\nHow to Make a Small-Scale Fungal Extract and Application: Learn the step-by-step process of creating a fungal extract that can enhance soil health and productivity. This practical session will cover everything from the ingredients and equipment needed to the application techniques that ensure maximum benefits for your soil.\nWhat Are the Weeds Telling Us: Discover how weeds can be indicators of soil health and nutrient deficiencies. This segment will teach you to interpret the presence of various weeds\, helping you understand what they reveal about your soil’s condition.\n\nWe look forward to a productive and enjoyable day of learning and community building! \nImportant information \nWe will meet at 10:30am in the Community Hall (1035 Southwood Road\, Severn Bridge). After lunch we will walk to Grenville Farm (1142 Graham Road\, Severn Bridge\, ON) for the hands-on workshop and demonstration. \nLunch at the Community Hall is included with your registration. \nIf parking is tight at Grenville farm\, please park at the Community Hall down the road. \nAbout the speakers \nVivian Kaloxilos is passionate about the natural world\, assisting and documenting life and biodiversity as it bounces back from states of degradation. She is an ecologist who specializes in soil ecology and applied soil life regeneration. She sees herself as a support system to farmers and landowners who are at the front lines of the regenerative movement. Through her company Docterre\, founded in 2015\, she has been educating\, supporting and accompanying farmers in their processes of regenerating soil biodiversity\, understanding the connection between the health of subterranean biodiversity and above ground plant and ecosystem health and performance\, and helping them to develop the practical skills needed to do so. \nDianne Kretschmar grew up in Edmonton\, Alberta\, and was used to the big skies of the Canadian prairies. While living in Toronto in the 1970s and eating a vegetarian diet to avoid commercial meat\, she began looking for land where she could raise her own cattle. She ended up in the rocky Muskoka region\, in the southernmost part of the Canadian Shield\, raising livestock and running a market garden. Her goal is to restore the fungal content of the agricultural soil\, knowing that our health and the soil health are intimately connected. \nDan Kretschmar grew up on Grenville Farm learning organic agriculture from his mother\, Dianne Kretschmar. He became involved in the political side of agriculture as a youth delegate for the National Farmers Union at gatherings of Via Campesina\, the transitional coalition of Indigenous and small farmers. Dan plans to start an agroecology school on his mother’s farm and is committed to a model of farming that honours the earth\, promotes biodiversity\, and offers dignified work. \nThis field day is supported by funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario.

SUMMARY:Kitchen Table Seed House Farm Tour and Seed Saving Demo
DESCRIPTION:Come see a seed farm in action and learn about small scale seed cleaning equipment\, cover cropping and selling fresh produce in conjunction with seed saving. \nKathy Rothermel and Annie Richard – the humans of Kitchen Table Seed House – are dedicated to providing the most productive and flavourful varieties of organic vegetables\, herbs and flowers to grow and enjoy – both in the garden and in the kitchen. They grow over three acres at two separate sites on Wolfe Island\, to allow for crop rotations and necessary isolation distances. They are working to improve existing varieties to better perform in our region’s climate and soils as well as develop new varieties of vegetables that are flavourful\, productive and better suited for organic systems. \nJoin these experienced seed growers and farmers for a day on Wolfe Island and an in-depth tour and conversation about their story and systems\, as well as a seed cleaning demonstration. \nAbout the hosts \nAnnie is an eater\, seed producer and budding plant breeder. While in culinary school\, Annie rounded out her experience with a summer farm internship where she discovered the incredible range and potential of flavour possibilities in the garden. She went on to learn on numerous farms\, studied Sustainable Agriculture at Fleming College and worked at Kingston’s Heirloom Seed Sanctuary. These experiences reinforced her interest in producing and developing quality seed. A growing knowledge of plant breeding and the ways it can best serve farmers and gardeners lead to her working under Dr. Michael Mazourek in the Plant Breeding department at Cornell University. Her current work to improve and develop varieties\, with flavour at the forefront\, is her central focus at Kitchen Table Seed House. \nKathy is a gardener\, organic seed producer and mother. A life-long love of the country\, and a desire to share that experience with her family\, led to a move to Wolfe Island. Meeting local seed savers opened her world to the necessity of regional seed for the growth of a resilient and robust food system. She is a founding member of the Kingston and Area Seed System Initiative (KASSI)\, co-founder of Kitchen Table Seed House and is active in National Farmers Union Local 316. This work has been a natural extension of her socially active family and community life\, and her strong belief in the importance of gathering to share good food around the kitchen table. \nPreparation \nPlease bring your own lunch and snacks. \nAccessibility information \nTo access Wolfe Island\, please take the Wolfe Island ferry\, free from downtown Kingston. Carpool is encouraged! Look for the Kitchen Table Seed House farm sign off Hwy 95 – this indicates the lane to turn into. \nParking information \nParking along farm lane\, and if need be on the side of the road
