DESCRIPTION:The diversity of peppers is truly amazing! Did you know there are 38 species of Capsicum peppers\, including Capsicum annum — the most commonly cultivated pepper species in the world. These species include a variety of peppers that are grown worldwide and valued as fresh vegetables\, spices\, medicine\, and ornamental plants. The wild ancestors of all peppers grew in tropical South America\, but these fruits now grow around the globe and are important to many cultures. \nHere in Canada farmers are involved in variety trials to find the best bell or shephard/corno peppers suited to their region\, some are breeding new varieties of peppers on-farm\, and chefs are using peppers to showcase the local diversity of foods! Join us for this 1-hour webinar to learn about pepper trials and on-farm plant breeding. \nThe webinar will start with a go-around of farmers in Ontario and Quebec doing on-farm selection\, before moving into a discussion and Q&A with Michael Mazourek\, the breeder at Cornell University behind the Habanada pepper. DESCRIPTION:Join Rebecca Ivanoff\, EFAO Seed Program Manager\, for this informal discussion. \nRebecca holds a M.S. in Anthropology and International Development from the University of Guelph and in 2013\, she joined Whole Circle Farm as a CRAFT intern\, and stayed on as staff to co-manage the 10-acre CSA and reintroduce seed production to the farm. During this time she also started the Southern Ontario Pepper Breeding Project with three other farmers in southern Ontario\, with support from plant breeders at Cornell University and in cooperation with EFAO’s Farmer-Led Research Program. Now as EFAO’s Seed Program Manager she supports farmers to learn about regional seed production\, and to implement participatory variety trials and plant breeding projects as part of The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security and EFAO’s Farmer-Led Research Program.  Bring your questions and ideas to this conversation! \nThis event is designed as a discussion space for new farmers but open to all EFAO members and those who are registered for Term 2 of the Ignatius New Farmer Training Program.

SUMMARY:Organic Mixed Farming in the North at Sleepy G Farm
DESCRIPTION:Since 2010\, Brendan and Marcelle have been operating Sleepy G Farm in Pass Lake\, ON\, 45km east of Thunder Bay. They grow 8 acres of Certified Organic vegetables and distribute through a 200-member CSA program in addition to wholesaling to grocery stores.  Sleepy G Farm also produces eggs and beef as a complement to nearly year-round vegetables sales that are made possible by an on-farm winter vegetable storage facility. Get a behind-the-scenes look at how they have turned a 171 acre abandoned dairy farm in northwestern Ontario into a thriving\, diversified farm business and the infrastructure they’ve put in place to support their operations. \nParticipants will be sent (in advance) a pre-recorded video farm tour\, then on June 24th at 1:30pm\, there will be an opportunity for participants to join in a live discussion and ask questions of Brendan and Marcelle about their farm operations. \nThis event is offered as part of the Ignatius Farm New Farmer Training Program. SUMMARY:Farming in Northeastern Ontario at Field Good Farms
DESCRIPTION:Ryan and Isabelle of Field Good Farms in Northeastern Ontario have spent the last 10 years figuring out the infrastructure and set-up that works best for their farm\, which provides CSA shares from June until December and wholesale vegetables year round. Take advantage of their years of experimentation\, cost analysis and tweaks and find out what makes the most sense for their farm business and why. Participants will be sent (in advance) a pre-recorded video farm tour of their greenhouses and tunnels\, major farm tools\, seeding and transplanting procedures\, no-till practices and packhouse set up. Then on May 27th at 1:30pm\, there will be an opportunity for participants to join in a live discussion and ask questions of Ryan and Isabelle about their farm operations. \nThis webinar is offered as part of the Ignatius Farm New Farmer Training Program. SUMMARY:Eat Local Grey Bruce: Lessons from Growth during COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:The collaborative marketing initiative Eat Local Grey Bruce is sharing lessons how they deal with rapid growth during these times of COVID-19. Eat Local is an online farmers market that sells food online to consumers\, then aggregates orders to their warehouse where they pack individual orders and deliver to houses and pickup locations. Eat Local is a not-for-profit cooperative with a broad vision of an ecological food system and a mission to build a community that supports farmers and consumers\, and regenerates the environment.\n\nThe webinar first summarizes the onset and evolution of the cooperative since its inception in 2016. Then\, we present how the crisis has boosted an unprecedented growth that came with many challenges and also new opportunities. Aspects include operational strategies for a two-fold increase in sales volume\, strategies to expand warehousing capacity within given infrastructure\, staff training and management\, and a shift to strict but pragmatic epidemiological food handling practices. The webinar is hosted by Thorsten Arnold\, instigator and designer of the coop\, and Jeannine Kralt\, current manager.\n
