SUMMARY:Planning the Post-Pandemic Season
DESCRIPTION:The French version follows the English version / La version française suit la présente version anglaise \n  \nIn Northern Ontario\, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in heightened consumer demand for locally grown and produced foods. Meeting this demand is proving difficult as agri-businesses face numerous challenges including lack of rural broadband\, labour shortages and limited options for processing. Despite these challenges\, many agri-businesses are finding innovative ways to facilitate consumer access to their products\, including leveraging social media\, enhancing local food initiatives\, and launching online stores and e-platforms. \n  \nAs farmers plan for the 2021 growing season\, how can the momentum of local food be further leveraged? Join David Thompson\, Manager of the Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN)\, as we reflect on this past year and identify what is needed to ensure stability and food security in the post-pandemic season. RAIN was part of a research collaborative that identified emerging needs of Northern Ontario agri-businesses and provided support for production\, distribution\, marketing and evidence-informed recommendations. \n  \nThe project has produced preliminary survey results available here. \n  \nPanelists: \n  \nSusan George\, ICT Sector Lead/Program Advisor\, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre\nAn experienced Advisor and Program Manager in High Tech\, she has worked across multiple organizations including Nortel\, Tellabs\, & Cisco Systems. With Program Management as her core skill\, she has built and executed thought leadership and initiatives to foster technology adoption in Sault Ste Marie and is passionate about making a larger impact in Northern Ontario with respect to Technology adoption. \n  \nChris Walker\, Head of Sales\, Local Line \nChris grew up on a small family beef farm in Bruce County\, Ontario where he still spends a great deal of time in the Summer helping his brother and father. After attending university\, Chris spent several years in enterprise software sales before ending up at Local Line where puts his experience to work where his passion lies; helping farmers to be more profitable. Chris has helped hundreds of farmers and markets across North America to transition to selling online and successfully save time while growing their business. \n  \nPeggy Baillie\, Co-owner\, Three Forks Farms Manitoulin Island \nPeggy Baillie is the co-owner of Three Forks Farms located in Ice Lake on Manitoulin Island. SUMMARY:Small Grains Meet-Up: Frost Seeding with Gerard Grubb
DESCRIPTION:Join Gerard Grubb to discuss frost seeding cover crops in winter wheat. Gerard has been farming in Bruce county with his sons since 1978 and has practiced practicing conservation tillage since 1982 and has been no-till since 2000. Gerard has relied on an extended rotation including corn-soy-wheat-cover crop\, to help build and maintain healthy soils. They have also had successes using biosolids for the past 5 years. He has been frost seeding covers for over 15 years and will share some of the things he’s learned about this method. \nParticipants will have the option of joining online via Zoom or by phone. \nA recording of this virtual meet-up will not be available.

The second webinar will consider what amendments and/or cover crops you might use to correct deficiencies you find. SUMMARY:Producing and Processing Amaranth
DESCRIPTION:EFAO farmer\, Ronaldo Lec\, believes Amaranthus sp. has an important story to tell. It is a highly versatile crop – it grows prolifically and is well-known for its capacity to tolerate a range of weather conditions. It has been touted as superfood due to its unusually high protein\, fiber\, and iron content; its gluten-free properties give it tremendous value-added potential; and its greens and seeds were an important staple of the many cultures in the Americas. This past season\, Ronaldo and his partner\, Myriam\, grew out a screening trial to see which varieties of amaranth are best suited for their region of southern Ontario. Ronaldo and Myriam are also the co-founders of Ecology & Solidarity (ECOSOL) a non-profit organization which works to promote the cultivation of amaranth.  \n  \nCome learn about this crop\, and its huge potential to support food sovereignty in Ontario and around the world. This webinar also provides a unique opportunity to learn about Indigenous knowledge\, particularly Ronaldo’s Kakchiquel knowledge\, and food plants native to the Americas. \n  \nJoin this webinar to learn more about the cultural importance of this crop as well as how to grow\, harvest and process it. DESCRIPTION:Is your farm business struggling to make a profit? Are your land\, water and ecosystems in need of rejuvenation? Do you struggle with the farm-work-life balance? Are you wondering about how you can pass on your farm and legacy? \n  \nHolistic Management helps farmers discover tools to make better\, more informed decisions to reach your family and farm goals. \n  \nThis online course takes place Thursday evenings\, weekly for 10 weeks\, from 7:30-9:30pm.  Participants will have access to digital Holistic Management manuals for goal setting\, decision testing\, financial planning\, biological monitoring and planned grazing. \n  \nThe first 3 sessions will explore goal setting and decision testing\, the next three will go through the financial planning process and the final sessions will cover monitoring\, grazing planning and review goal setting and decision testing after participants have had a chance to use their holistic goal and test decisions during the previous weeks.  During the course participants will have been able to develop an initial holistic goal\, a draft financial plan and\, depending on the operation\, a grazing plan or crop or garden plan. \n  \nThis course is for farmers of any experience level who are new to holistic management\, though it might be especially beneficial for those who have some experience farming and managing their own operation. \n  \nRecordings of the sessions will be sent to all registrants after they take place. \n  \nNote: There is a minimum and maximum number of participants we can accommodate\, and running the course will depend on registration numbers. Prices listed are per farm team. \n  \nAbout the Facilitator: Tony McQuail bought his farm near Lucknow\, Ontario in 1973. He and his wife\, Fran\, have run a diversified organic farm raising livestock\, a small apple orchard and operated a community supported garden. McQuail was an early adopter of rotational grazing and has decades of experience in pasture management and fencing systems. At Meeting Place Organic Farm they raise grass fed and finished beef\, pastured pork and pastured poultry and have done some experimenting with cocktail cover crops. They do much of their farming with work horses and provide training in this skill to apprentices. They took a played out crop farm from approximately 1.5 soil organic matter to 3.5 to 7% organic matter moving CO2 from the atmosphere into the soil. The McQuails have transferred the farm operation to their daughter Katrina and continue to be actively involved in it. \n

DESCRIPTION:The annual EFAO Conference is back! The Conference draws farmers and supporters from across the food system for six days of learning\, idea-sharing\, networking and celebration. Because of social distancing and gathering guidelines\, this year’s event will take place in a virtual format\, providing an opportunity for ecological farmers to connect in a whole new way. \n  \nThis year’s theme – Rooted & Reaching – speaks to farmers’ connection to land and community\, while also recognizing the need and desire to reach further for a more ecological\, healthy and just agriculture and food system in Ontario. DESCRIPTION:Join Kim and Pat from Cornell Farms as they host a conversation for direct market livestock producers to reflect on an unprecedented season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kim and Pat will begin by sharing adaptation strategies that worked for them and provide the opportunity for farmers to share their own adaptations\, what worked and what didn’t\, and what strategies they will be keeping for the 2021 season. This will be a great opportunity to learn from and share with other direct market producers farmers in Ontario. \n  \nA zoom link will be sent to registrants ahead of the event.
