SUMMARY:Small Grains Meet-Up: Growing Small Grains for the First Time
DESCRIPTION:In April\, a diversified field crop farmer and Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) member\, Andy Linder will share his successes and failures with growing oats for the first time. Andy farms with his family in south-central Minnesota and has slowly transitioned their farm to more ecological practices over the past ten years. You can read more about Andy below. \n  \nEFAO’s Small Grains program was inspired by PFI’s Small Grains Program. Since 2016\, PFI has supported the adoption of small grains on over 10\,000 acres across Iowa in just 4 years. \nAbout Andy: \nAndy and his dad\, Don\, farm near Easton\, Minnesota. Together\, they raise corn\, soybeans\, oats\, and grass hay. Their journey to soil health unintentionally started in 2010 when they purchased a vertical tillage machine and ran trials to compare that machine vs. a deep ripper for fall tillage. After a few years of trials they were convinced enough to stop using the ripper and sell it. Then\, in the fall of 2014\, Andy tried his first interseeded cover crop by flying cereal rye into soybeans. After some trials with cover crops and attending more soil health conferences\, he made the decision to stop tilling and cover every acre; and the fall of 2016\, Andy and Don seeded a cover crop on every acre and continue to using cover crop extensively. Currently Andy no tills all of this beans and is trying strip till corn with the goal of going to no-till corn after a few years of building better soil. Andy has recently started a cover crop sales and application business. He does custom hire with a high clearance cover crop seeder and matches customers with other modes of applications.

DESCRIPTION:While ecological farmers know more about soil health than many\, this conversation invites us to look at soil health as a series of relationships. In Afro-Indigenous teachings throughout time and place\, the natural world\, including the soil that feeds us\, is not a resource. Soil\, water\, air\, plants\, animals are a series of relationships in which humans have their role\, in a beautiful exchange of nourishment and obligation. Afro-Indigenous teachings and skills highlight the need to tend\, nurture\, and weave to maintain relationships of balance above and below ground.\n\n\n\n  \nUnderstanding soil ecosystems as a web of living relationships can inspire us as growers to cultivate more diverse microbial communities within the soil through practices like increasing plant diversity aboveground\, covering the soil and leaving soil layers intact. De-colonizing our farm practices fosters stronger\, more diverse relationships\, increasing resilience and abundance\, as well as a deeper sense of connection and belonging to the land.\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nFacilitator: Angel Beyde \nAngel is a Black / mixed race grower of food and flowers. An Organic Master Gardener\, educator and facilitator\, Angel has worked in Urban Ag\, eco-landscaping and non-profits for many years. She is passionate about regenerative growing practices as key to food security and community abundance. Angel and her husband Raph are currently looking for rural land with a home to start their organic market garden Good Fortune Farmstead in 2021.

SUMMARY:Small Grains Meet-Up: Selling Specialty Grain with Max Meighen
DESCRIPTION:With the rise of local food reaching the grain sector\, specialty markets are one way for farmers to get higher prices for their small grains. Marketing specialty grain\, however\, can be daunting. \n  \nTo help demystify selling specialty grain\, Max Meighen of Avling Kitchen and Brewery will join us to share some of the things that end users are considering when buying specialty grain and tips for developing relationships with speciality grain buyers. \n\n\nAbout Max \nMax Meighen\, a former chef and brewer\, started work on Avling in 2015\, upon returning to Canada after a stint working overseas. By embracing the promise and potential of the circular economy\, Alving aims to be so much more than a standard craft brewery. Waste from the brewery and kitchen is redirected to the rooftop farm\, where we grow a wide variety of fruits\, vegetables\, and botanicals\, all of which find their way onto the menu or in one of our beers. Circularity is also realised through our supplier relationships. Winter grains planted by our pork supplier are harvested and sent to local malt houses to be turned into the raw materials for our beer. The Avling gardeners were thrilled to take part in the 2020 Canadian Organic Vegetable Improvement trials administered by the EAFO and we look forward to more farmer lead research on our roof. We all are looking forward to a happier and healthier 2021 and beyond.

Meeting this demand is proving difficult as agri-businesses face numerous challenges including lack of rural broadband\, labour shortages and limited options for processing. Despite these challenges\, many agri-businesses are finding innovative ways to facilitate consumer access to their products\, including leveraging social media\, enhancing local food initiatives\, and launching online stores and e-platforms. \n  \nAs farmers plan for the 2021 growing season\, how can the momentum of local food be further leveraged? Join David Thompson\, Manager of the Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN)\, as we reflect on this past year and identify what is needed to ensure stability and food security in the post-pandemic season. RAIN was part of a research collaborative that identified emerging needs of Northern Ontario agri-businesses and provided support for production\, distribution\, marketing and evidence-informed recommendations. \n  \nThe project has produced preliminary survey results available here. \n  \nPanelists: \n  \nSusan George\, ICT Sector Lead/Program Advisor\, Sault Ste. Chris has helped hundreds of farmers and markets across North America to transition to selling online and successfully save time while growing their business. \n  \nPeggy Baillie\, Co-owner\, Three Forks Farms Manitoulin Island \nPeggy Baillie is the co-owner of Three Forks Farms located in Ice Lake on Manitoulin Island. DESCRIPTION:Join Gerard Grubb to discuss frost seeding cover crops in winter wheat. Gerard has been farming in Bruce county with his sons since 1978 and has practiced practicing conservation tillage since 1982 and has been no-till since 2000. Gerard has relied on an extended rotation including corn-soy-wheat-cover crop\, to help build and maintain healthy soils. They have also had successes using biosolids for the past 5 years. Venez vous joindre à Matt LeRoux\, consultant en marketing agricole et agent de vulgarisation à l’Université Cornell\, pour cet atelier qui vous aidera à mieux comprendre le consommateur\, la tarification\, les formats d’emballage et la meilleure façon d’atteindre les consommateurs. SUMMARY:Understanding your Soil Test
DESCRIPTION:Two-part webinar series: February 3 and 10\, 1pm to 2:30pm \n  \n**If you did not attend the first session\, you are still welcome to register. The session 1 recording will be sent to you early the week of February 8th\, and you will be able to attend the second session live. Recording of session 2 will also be sent to all registrants.** \n  \nTaking soil tests both for nutrients and biology are important management techniques so that organic farmers can increase yields\, improve crop quality\, reduce weed problems and improve soil health. The first webinar will show you how to take a soil sample\, where to send it and help you understand the results when you get them back. You will leave with an understanding of what your nutrient and biological goals should be. The second webinar will consider what amendments and/or cover crops you might use to correct deficiencies you find. This workshop will be useful for growers of all sizes. \n  \nRecorded webinars will be available to all registrants after they take place. \n  \nFacilitated by Ken Laing of Orchard Hill Farm \n  \nIn order to make our training and community building events accessible to all farmers (and future farmers) in Ontario\, EFAO strives to cover registration fees for anyone who needs financial assistance.
