DESCRIPTION:Interpreting soil tests and understanding nutrient deficiencies is an important management technique so that ecological farmers can increase yields\, improve crop quality\, reduce weed problems\, and improve soil health. This webinar will briefly explain the importance of different soil nutrients found on a soil test\, how to read the soil test\, and how to interpret that test to choose what soil amendments to apply. You will leave with a better understanding of how to use a soil test to manage\, amend\, and correct deficiencies in your soil. This workshop will be useful for market gardeners who have an intermediate understanding of soil health. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \n  \nEvan Quigley starting The Kitchen Garden farm located in eastern Ontario in 2009.  With over a decade of soil health knowledge acquired through trial and error\, consulting with experts\, and a deep dive down the rabbit hole of soil health\, Evan has found a combination of strategies that are proving to be very efficient at producing some of the best quality vegetables possible. SUMMARY:Farming With Predatory Beneficial Insects
DESCRIPTION:Beneficial insects are the unsung heroes of our farming practices. Silently and out of sight\, day or night\, they pollinate complex crops and control pest outbreaks we don’t even know are coming. This workshop will be focused on predatory and parasitoid insects and the type of habitats and farming practices that can be utilized to help them flourish. This workshop will be split into two parts. The first part will be a presentation diving deeper into creating spaces and practices to bring native beneficial insects to your farm. The second part will be a more open forum where we can work together to share our experiences with predatory beneficial insects and work through any questions on utilizing bio-controls for your farm’s upcoming season. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Fianna Dirks has been working as a farmer for the last 11 years focusing on organic growing\, on-farm compost production\, and beneficial insect habitat creation. SUMMARY:No-Till 101 for Market & Home Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Join Isabelle and Ryan from Field Good Farms for a small-scale no-till primer\, just in time for the 2022 growing season! This session is intended to equip you with the confidence to put some no-till principles into practice and will be suitable for market gardeners and home scale growers who are operating on a few acres or less. This session is best suited to those who are relatively new to no-till growing (<3 years experience) and would like to gain suggestions and tips for implementing no-till practices. Isabelle and Ryan will share some general no-till principles and lessons they’ve learned along the way\, and then dig into participant questions. \n  \nPlease fill out this brief survey as soon a possible so that the presenters can tailor the information they share to benefit the greatest number of participants. \n  \nAbout the Speakers: Isabelle Spence-Legault and Ryan Spence are co-owners/operators of Field Good Farms/La ferme j’me champs bien\, a small-scale organic vegetable farm in Northeastern Ontario founded in 2011. Currently Field Good Farms operates a 40 member winter CSA program\, a 60 member spring CSA program\, a 90 member summer CSA program\, a 70 member fall CSA program and sell to Click Fork\, an online farmers market they helped to create in 2018.  Field Good Farms is constantly evolving\, but currently their interests include increasing biodiversity\, conservation\, soil amelioration\, including more perennial crops and value added products for the CSA program\, meaningful leadership and living joyfully. Ryan and Isabelle have many years of experience with no-till practices.

Join us for a friendly meetup to kick off the beginning of the growing season and connect with fellow Black\, Indigenous and other farmers of colour. \n  \nAliyah Fraser of Lucky Bug Farm will get us started with a presentation on Getting ready for spring: Starting seeds\, potting up\, hardening off and prepping the growing space! Q & A to follow\, so bring all your questions about getting ready for spring. \n  \nAbout Aliyah \nAliyah is a Kitchener based farmer who started Lucky Bug Farm at the beginning of 2021 with the goal of cultivating a more just and sustainable food system. This year she’ll be starting her second season at a new quarter acre growing space in Baden\, Ontario. At Lucky Bug Farm\, Aliyah grows a variety of vegetables and herbs for CSA members and market customers using minimal tillage\, intensive intercropping and other ecologically beneficial farming practices. Aliyah graduated from the University of Waterloo with an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies in 2019 and worked as an Urban Planner before becoming immersed in farming after a mentorship program in the fall of 2020. Aliyah is a big fan of sharp cheeses\, believes food and housing are human rights\, enjoys working with natural fibres and hopes to one day bridge the gap between land use and food system planning. \n  \n\n\n\n\nThis meeting is reserved for BIPOC farmers and aspiring farmers and will be hosted by Angel Beyde and Amy Cheng. \n  \nRSVP at any point until 6 pm on Thursday February 24 by emailing anti-racism@efao.ca. SUMMARY:Collaborative Variety Trials Results
DESCRIPTION:As part of our CANOVI program\, growers across Canada have been trialing\, evaluating\, and recording data on important crop varieties like carrots\, red bell peppers\, radicchio\, and rutabaga. This has been the first project of its kind in Canada\, creating a large network of agro-ecological growers who\, together\, are able to fill gaps in our knowledge about what these crops can do in their climates and with their farm practices. Join us for this session to talk about the findings from work done across Canada in 2021. DESCRIPTION:After a few seasons of testing out different online platforms to manage CSA members\, Naomi decided to use a combination of free and low cost programs instead. Naomi now runs Manorun’s 200 member CSA with customized orders each week using do-it-yourself solutions learned from experience. This has allowed the farm to save money and build better relationships with CSA members. Join this session for a walk-through of the processes and to hear about the pros and cons of this DIY system. \nAbout the Speaker: Naomi holds a B.A. in International Development Studies from the University of Guelph. Her international experiences in agriculture ultimately led her full circle back to the family farm. Naomi manages Manorun Organic farm\, a CSA vegetable and livestock farm in Hamilton. Working for EFAO as the Conference Coordinator and setting down roots in her community have provided meaningful ways to tackle important farming and food system issues.

DESCRIPTION:Silvopasture is the integration of grazing livestock\, trees\, and forages which builds more productive and resilient farm ecosystems. This course will cover the basic key points for both converting woodlands and pasture to silvopasture systems\, discussing when a given piece of land is appropriate (and not)\, and the approach and tools needed to succeed. He is Agroforestry Extension Specialist for the Cornell Small Farm Program and has served as guest faculty at Cornell University\, Sterling College\, Paul Smiths College\, and the Omega Center for Sustainable Living. Alongside his wife\, Elizabeth\, he co-stewards Wellspring Forest Farm\, where they produce mushrooms\, maple syrup\, duck eggs\, pastured lamb\, and elderberry extract\, all from forest-based systems. Steve co-authored Farming the Woods with Ken Mudge in 2014\, and is author of the new book Silvopasture\, released in 2018. He passionately pursues work to reconnect people to the forested landscape and see the value of trees and forests as an essential part of a regenerative future.

DESCRIPTION:Join EFAO and Ferme Agricola as we kick off our winter Land Access Series! \nThe Land Access Series is intended to provide practical tools and visionary ideas to support equitable access to land by farmers\, while prioritizing tools and ideas that may reduce barriers for farmers who identify as Black\, Indigenous\, or People of Colour (BIPOC). While the root causes of land inaccessibility must be addressed through policy and systemic approaches\, EFAO recognizes that this problem is sticky and complex\, and on-the-ground solutions must be found while larger scale approaches are pursued. EFAO hopes that this series can demonstrate useful models\, practices\, and ways of approaching land access to equip participants with new tools and resources to support their own land access journeys. \nAbout this session: Agricola Cooperative Farm is a worker’s cooperative in Papineauville\, Quebec. Founders Natalie\, Heather\, Caleb\, and Hannahare using a collaborative model that allowed them to co-purchase farmland\, and collectively manage their farm business\, focussing on organic vegetables\, cut flowers\, and asparagus. Join Natalie and Heather from Ferme Agricola and get down and dirty with the details of their collaborative process and structures. They will share how they have structured their land access and farm business and why\, and what government supports and other resources made this possible. Wherever possible\, information on Ontario equivalents will be provided. This is a unique opportunity to dig into a non-traditional land ownership model AND a cooperative business model\, and to take away tools\, lessons learned\, and other resources to support you in your own quest to access land.

What are the most successful cover crops for northern climates? What are the benefits and challenges of adding cover crops to field crop rotations? Find the answers to these questions and more at this comprehensive webinar for field crop producers\, offered in partnership by the Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN)\, Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance (NOFIA) and EFAO. \n  \nSpeakers: \n  \nCallum Morrison is a graduate student at the University of Manitoba specializing in cover cropping on the Canadian prairies through the 2020 Prairie Cover Crop Survey and in Ontario through the 2020 Ontario Cover Crop Feedback Project.  Originally from Scotland\, Callum is now living in the Red River Valley of Manitoba. Callum has thoroughly enjoyed his research journey\, especially working alongside organizations\, and most importantly\, connecting with the farmers themselves. \n  \nJoshua Nasielski from the Department of Plant Agriculture at the University of Guelph is currently working on a research project on the use of a small grain cover crop in corn and soybean rotations. Josh will share the results of his research to date\, with a focus on findings for New Liskeard\, including key takeaways to date\, and the cover crop mixes with which they have found the most success. \n  \nTerry Phillips is an agronomist at Co-op Regionale de Nipissing-Sudbury\, and a farmer and seed retailer based in New Liskeard. Terry farms 420 acres in the Temiskaming District\, near New Liskeard\, Ontario and runs a rotation of canola\, spring or winter wheat\, RR soybeans\, and either pedigreed oats or pedigreed barley\, and processed pedigreed oats and barley are wholesaled through their company: Phillips Seeds Ltd. All crops are no-till except for soybeans and Terry has started growing cover crops (55% tillage radish and 45% crimson clover) after cereal harvest. DESCRIPTION:Are you growing wheat\, spelt and other small grains such as oats\, barley\, rye or triticale – or interested in getting started? At the Grain Buyers Meet and Greet\, you will have the opportunity to hear about and discuss how to maximize the economic benefits of being part of or entering the grains market! There will be a specific focus on small grains in this session. The session will begin with several buyers providing a brief presentation on their business\, what products they are looking for and what they have to offer farmers. Following the presentations\, buyers will be separated into breakout rooms. Attendees will then have the option to move between rooms and ask buyers their more specific questions. All types and scales of farmers are welcome. DESCRIPTION:It’s been great to share knowledge\, laughs\, and skills during our monthly Seed Growers Meetups in late October. This next Meet-Up will be the last this year\, though there will be chances to gather as a seed growers community at the EFAO Conference and during Farmer Led Research Workshops. \n  \nFarmers\, bring your questions and areas of contemplation; we’ll work together to try to address as many as we can. Maybe you have some questions about what seeds you’d like to grow next year? Or about how to best thresh\, dehull\, or winnow a particular crop? Perhaps you want to connect with potential farmers or seed companies for regional breeding projects  in 2022? Perhaps you want to hear about how this year’s breeding projects went and ask questions about ones you want to start next year? This is the place for all of these questions and conversations! \n  \nThis is the seventh Seed Grower Meet Up which we are hosting monthly for EFAO members. Growers of all experience levels and at all points in the process of seed saving and production are welcome. DESCRIPTION:La version française suit la présente version anglaise (The French version follows the English version) \n  \nIn Part 3 of the Northern Climate Webinar Series\, join Kim Jo Bliss from KJB Herefords and the Ontario Crops Research Centre in Emo\, Mike & Carolyn Huber from Misty Creek Homestead in Kakabeka Falls\, and Ericka & Zach Reszitnyk from Haywire Farms in Gillies Township to hear about their strategies and experiences for dealing with drought and discuss what measures they’re planning to put in place for the future. Pamela Iwanchysko\, Livestock Specialist with the Department of Agriculture and Resource Development in Manitoba\, will start the evening off by sharing strategies that can help build pasture resilience and productivity in planned grazing systems. \n  \nKim Jo Bliss\, KJB Herefords \nKim Jo Bliss raises purebred Hereford and Hereford Angus cross cattle\, as well as a small sheep flock\, just west of Emo\, in Rainy River District. She also manages the Ontario Crops Research Centre (operated by the University of Guelph) in Emo and is on the Board of Directors of Beef Farmers of Ontario. \n  \nMike & Carolyn Huber\, Misty Creek Homestead \nMike and Carolyn produce beef for direct market sales in Kakabeka Falls. Their cattle graze during the summer months\, and are finished on a mixture of forage and locally grown grains during the winter months. \n  \nEricka & Zach Reszitnyk\, Haywire Farms \nEricka and Zack raise cattle\, pigs and meat chickens – with a focus on pasture management and regenerative agriculture – on their first-generation farm in Gillies township. \n  \nPamela Iwanchysko\, Livestock Specialist \nPam is a Livestock Specialist with the Department of Agriculture and Resource Development in Dauphin\, Manitoba (3.5 hours north of Winnipeg).  She has spent the last 6 summers working at the MBFI research farm north of Brandon\, Manitoba in researching and determining the differences between a planned grazing vs. continuous grazing system. DESCRIPTION:Financing is a major barrier to many new farmers.  This panel will provide an overview of some of the different types of financing options and programs for new farmers and the requirements for them.  There will also be an opportunity to ask questions of the representatives from different financing institutions and organizations (such as Fair Finance Fund and Community Futures Ontario). \n  \nThis event is offered as part of the Ignatius Farm New Farmer Training Program. Educational content is geared toward new farmers\, but is open to all farmers who might be curious about a certain topic\, wishing to expand their farming knowledge\, or in need of a refresh.
