Rav will share everything from sourcing seed and germination\, to growing tips\, marketing and pricing. Q & A to follow\, so bring all your questions about these beloved crops. \n  \nAbout Rav \nRav (she/her) is a young farmer and climate educator in Mississauga. She runs a food and climate justice organization called Shade of Miti. Rav specializes in growing local and organic bitter melon\, okra\, eggplants and hot peppers. DESCRIPTION:Not only are flowers beautiful to humans and pollinators alike\, but the cut flower sector is experiencing unprecedented growth. This has created a tremendous opportunity for ecological flower seed producers. However\, there is a distinct lack of information on species-specific seed production\, and how to produce quality flower seed. Growers are often stymied by the lack of information about the isolation requirements for different species\, how to collect and clean the seed\, and what to do about low and/or variable germination rates. DESCRIPTION:The Land Access Series is intended to provide practical tools and visionary ideas to support equitable access to land by farmers\, while prioritizing tools and ideas that may reduce barriers for farmers who face increased systemic marginalization. While the root causes of land inaccessibility must be addressed through policy and systemic approaches\, EFAO recognizes that this problem is sticky and complex\, and on-the-ground solutions must be found while larger scale approaches are pursued. EFAO hopes that this series can demonstrate useful models\, practices\, and ways of approaching land access to equip participants with new tools and resources to support their land access journeys. \n  \nAbout this session (French translation to follow below):  \nPlease note Regeneration Canada Members receive FREE access to this session! As the future home of Ga Gitigemi Gamik (We Will Plant Lodge)\, the site will host Indigenous women and 2SLGBTTQQIA+ people to reclaim Traditional Ecological Knowledge and practices.  \n  \nIn this workshop\, Celeste will share her story and advice related to developing a Cultural Easement\, including building effective relationships\, models and precedents to follow\, and what kinds of legal and professional resources are available and/or recommended to support both landowners and land seekers interested in exploring this model. DESCRIPTION:Cleaning seed is the process of removing small light seeds\, field debris and other undesirable matter. It’s a key step to improve germination rates and overall quality of any given seed lot. Whether you are an artisanal or commercial seed grower\, seed cleaning equipment can help reduce the amount of time and labor it takes. However\, finding equipment adapted to your scale can be a challenge ! Two options are available for seed growers. The first is to purchase seed equipment\, and the second is to adapt or build your own equipment for your specific purposes. Phil is deeply passionate about food security\, local agriculture and permaculture practices and has developed a serious expertise on fruit trees through a combination of trial and error and advice from Ron over the years. \n  \n  \nRachel Lachance\, Black River Foraging Co.: \nRachel Lachance is the owner and founder of Black River Foraging Co.\, she began her land-based business in 2016 in response to the global climate crisis by drawing on her background in forestry\, eco-tourism and community development. She envisions a cultural shift of regenerative land-use practices and a resurgence of local land-based knowledge in Northeastern Ontario. She is currently developing food forests throughout the region and food security programming as part of her role with Keepers of the Circle as their Food Sovereignty Initiatives Coordinator. DESCRIPTION:The rules and regulations guiding intellectual property rights for vegetable crops–such as plant variety protections\, contracts\, and patents–can be confusing and problematic. Crafted to enable the collection of royalty fees  in newly developed crop varieties\, these tools have proven to be somewhat inflexible and inequitable. In response\, there has been a surge of support for initiatives\, such as the Open Source Seed Initiative\, which keep seed in the public domain. We will explore the impacts of both frameworks for seed savers. Both of these approaches reflect settler culture and what it tells us about human dominion over seeds. We’ll learn about parallel and contrasting seed cultures within Indigenous seed systems and relationships. Please join us for this technical and cultural discussion about seed as private property. Jim and Wanda Johnston have been raising 100% grass-fed beef and pastured lamb at Pasture Hill Farm in New Liskeard for the past 28 years\, and have a commercial-sized flock of 650 ewes. Q & A to follow\, so bring all your questions about getting ready for spring. \n  \nAbout Aliyah \nAliyah is a Kitchener based farmer who started Lucky Bug Farm at the beginning of 2021 with the goal of cultivating a more just and sustainable food system. This year she’ll be starting her second season at a new quarter acre growing space in Baden\, Ontario. At Lucky Bug Farm\, Aliyah grows a variety of vegetables and herbs for CSA members and market customers using minimal tillage\, intensive intercropping and other ecologically beneficial farming practices. Aliyah graduated from the University of Waterloo with an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies in 2019 and worked as an Urban Planner before becoming immersed in farming after a mentorship program in the fall of 2020. DESCRIPTION:After a few seasons of testing out different online platforms to manage CSA members\, Naomi decided to use a combination of free and low cost programs instead. Naomi now runs Manorun’s 200 member CSA with customized orders each week using do-it-yourself solutions learned from experience. This has allowed the farm to save money and build better relationships with CSA members. Join this session for a walk-through of the processes and to hear about the pros and cons of this DIY system. \nAbout the Speaker: Naomi holds a B.A. in International Development Studies from the University of Guelph. Her international experiences in agriculture ultimately led her full circle back to the family farm. Naomi manages Manorun Organic farm\, a CSA vegetable and livestock farm in Hamilton. Participants will not be able to access a recording afterward\, and are encouraged to attend live. \nThis session will focus on what mental health is and why it is important to talk about it within the agriculture community. Using the Stop-Think-Act method\, this session will present a simple proactive approach to help take care of our mental health and be an ally for family and colleagues. Discussions will include stress\, common stressors in agriculture\, stigma and how to reduce risk. Tools and resources to help during a crisis will also be provided. \nThis session is intended for anyone in the Agriculture industry\, including employers\, employees and family members alike. Employees working within agriculture are encouraged to register for this session\, or an identical session February 22nd from 7-9pm. Employers\, Managers\, and sole proprietors are encouraged to register for a similar session February 23rd from 7-9pm or February 24th from 12-2pm. If you cannot attend the session intended for your group (Employees or Employers/Managers/sole proprietors)\, you are welcome to attend any session that fits your schedule. \nAbout the speaker: Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) is a not for profit health and safety organization. SUMMARY:Silvopasture Intensive
DESCRIPTION:Silvopasture is the integration of grazing livestock\, trees\, and forages which builds more productive and resilient farm ecosystems. This course will cover the basic key points for both converting woodlands and pasture to silvopasture systems\, discussing when a given piece of land is appropriate (and not)\, and the approach and tools needed to succeed. Participants will have access to a library of resources outside of class\, and be encouraged to do some planning on their own farm designs in between sessions. The live sessions with farmer and Silvopasture author Steve Gabriel will be focused on looking at various participant farms as case studies so we can collectively find solutions and connect to an Ontario-based community of practice around silvopasture. These recordings are not required viewing\, but will provide background preparation if desired\, particularly for those who are newer to the subject. \nAbout the Instructor: Steve Gabriel is an ecologist\, forest farmer\, and educator living in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State in the US. Throughout his career\, Steve has taught thousands of farmers and land managers about the ways farming and forestry can be combined to both benefit the ecology and the bottom line of the farm. He is Agroforestry Extension Specialist for the Cornell Small Farm Program and has served as guest faculty at Cornell University\, Sterling College\, Paul Smiths College\, and the Omega Center for Sustainable Living. Alongside his wife\, Elizabeth\, he co-stewards Wellspring Forest Farm\, where they produce mushrooms\, maple syrup\, duck eggs\, pastured lamb\, and elderberry extract\, all from forest-based systems. Steve co-authored Farming the Woods with Ken Mudge in 2014\, and is author of the new book Silvopasture\, released in 2018. He passionately pursues work to reconnect people to the forested landscape and see the value of trees and forests as an essential part of a regenerative future.

DESCRIPTION:It’s a New Year and also a very busy time for Seed Growers as you pack seeds and plan your gardens. And yet\, through it all we still have questions for each other and ideas to share. Are you curious about how others pack seed? Are you curious about how you might apply for funding to do a variety trial through the Farmer-Led Research Program? Perhaps you want to connect with potential farmers or seed companies for regional breeding projects? Maybe you want to come hear about the exciting programs that the EFAO Seed Program is running in 2022! \n  \nFarmers\, bring your questions and areas of contemplation; we’ll work together to try to address as many as we can. This is the place for all of these questions and conversations!  \n  \nThis Seed Grower Meet Up is hosted monthly for EFAO members. Growers of all experience levels and at all points in the process of seed saving and production are welcome. Participants will have the chance to network\, strategize on issues\, and learn with other seed growers.
