DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Pfisterer Farm in Wellington County\, where Jess Pfisterer and her family are figuring out how to make small grains fit their farm! Relatively new to the field crop game\, Jess is testing out products and management methods to find her groove.  \n  \nSpecial guest Lyss Gingras\, CCA\, from Agronomy Advantage will be on site to share scouting tips for your small grain crops. Enjoy a hands-on learning experience with important reminders about yield-robbing pests\, weeds\, diseases and deficiencies.  \n  \nIn addition to small grains\, the Pfisterers produce pastured meats\, free range eggs\, and hay. They are passionate about farming in a way that preserves natural resources for their son\, and future generations\, to enjoy. DESCRIPTION:It’s that busy time of year as we get seeds and transplants in the ground\, and yet still questions and queries about seeds and seed production still come up. Seed growers and seed curious folks\, bring your seed questions and areas of contemplation to our EFAO Seed Grower Meet Up and we’ll work together to try to address as many as we can. And when we find a question we can’t address at the moment\, this is a place to let the Seed Program Manager know so we can arrange further education opportunities. This Meet-up offers a place for us to share our seed producing knowledge and to hear about upcoming seed events. As always\, our goal is to encourage each other to grow a great diversity of seeds of high quality and in the quantities growers need. \n  \nThis Seed Grower Meet Up is hosted monthly for EFAO members. Growers of all experience levels and at all points in the process of seed saving and production are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Greenhouses and hoop houses are turning green with little seedlings that have not only been started off with seed but may also be destined to produce seed for our regional seed system! What seeds are you growing this year that you’ll collect more seed from later this year? This Meet-up offers a place for us to share our seed producing knowledge and to hear about upcoming projects\, webinars\, or workshops you can get involved with. As always\, our goal is to encourage each other to grow a great diversity of seeds of high quality and in the quantities growers need. \n  \nGrowers\, bring your seed questions and areas of contemplation; we’ll work together to try to address as many as we can. And when we find a question we can’t address at the moment\, this is a place to let the Seed Program Manager know so we can arrange further education opportunities.  \n  \nThis Seed Grower Meet-up is hosted monthly for EFAO members. Growers of all experience levels and at all points in the process of seed saving and production are welcome.

For Ken\, his trials involve planting organic potatoes into a standing cover crop of rye/hairy vetch\, mowing the cover crop and letting the potatoes grow without any tillage for weeds or hilling. For Ryan\, his trials involve testing various fall-planted cover crops ahead of conventional potato production. Learn about the details of these systems\, including their successes\, challenges and next steps through short presentations about the trials followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to this chance to converse freely about ways to improve this year’s trialing experience and how to shape the next 5 years of the Canadian Organic Vegetable Improvement Project (CANOVI) \n  \nGrowers who are currently\, have been in the past\, or those interested in becoming involved in CANOVI variety trials or breeding work in the future\, are invited to bring their questions and topics of interest. \n  \nThe Canadian Organic Vegetable Improvement Project (CANOVI) has been a 5-year program (2018-2023) to build a collaborative network of farmers\, researchers\, and industry stakeholders to: \n  \n\nTest varieties for (1) adaptation to agro-ecological practices\, (2) nutrition and flavour\, and (3) local seed production;\nTeach farmers the principles and practice of trialing and breeding;\nImplement on-farm participatory plant breeding projects to create\, improve or adapt vegetable crops.\n\n  \nThe discussion will be framed around the following topics: \n  \n1)The last year of CANOVI trials (carrots\, radicchio\, rutabaga\, and more) \n\nWhat quantitative and qualitative data matters to you?\nHow can we build a stronger community of practice around CANOVI?\n\n  \n2) The next 5-year Organic Science Cluster Funding (2023-2028) \n\nWhat crops are you interested in and why?\nWhat on-farm plant breeding projects are you excited about?\nWould you be interested in being part of an advisory committee to inform our future work?\n\n  \nThis conversation will also be an opportunity for the research team to present three concepts that is orienting its future work: \n  \n\nParticipatory and collective approaches;\nGenomics and genome-environment association;\nFunctional traits and adaptive strategies.\n\n  \n* Please note that this is a bilingual event and that simulatenous translation will be available

DESCRIPTION:The Ignatius New Farmer Training Program is a collaboration between the Ignatius Jesuit Centre\, EFAO\, Everdale and the National Farmers Union Ontario.  \n  \nEducational content is geared toward new farmers\, but is open to all farmers who might be curious about a certain topic\, wishing to expand their farming knowledge\, or in need of a refresh. \n  \nImportant Information About the 2022 Ignatius Farm New Farmer Training Program:\n\nThe 2022 Ignatius Farm New Farmer Training Program is FREE for everyone! This program is a project of Employment Ontario and is funded in part by the Canadian Government and the Ontario Government.\n\n\nAll course resources and recordings will only be available on the Moodle Course Platform. SUMMARY:Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is spreading rapidly across the province and affects small flocks\, backyard flocks\, commercial operations (both organic and conventional)\, and wild birds. HPAI has a close to 100% mortality rate in chickens and turkeys\, is spread through many domestic and wild bird species\, and is highly infectious. \n  \nUnderstanding how HPAI spreads and what you can do to minimize your flock’s risk of infection and of spreading HPAI to your area is imperative for anyone keeping any kind of bird. Join Al Dam\, Provincial Poultry Specialist from OMAFRA\, and colleagues for an interactive session about HPAI in an ecological farming context — from pastured birds to backyard flocks. This session will focus on sharing practical information in order to reduce the risks of contracting and transmitting HPAI. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and brainstorm solutions to their specific biosecurity context. \n  \nAnyone in the EFAO community who raises poultry or keeps birds\, including ducks\, geese\, chickens\, turkeys\, or other birds for meat\, eggs\, or show are encouraged to attend this important information session.

Join this session\, intended for market and home garden vegetable growers\, to brainstorm ecological solutions to insect pest problems and opportunities to support predatory beneficial insects in your garden planning. Participants will be able to share their questions and ideas and work in groups to create pest management plans for the upcoming season. All experience levels welcome. \n  \nAbout the Facilitator: Fianna Dirks has been working as a farmer for the last 11 years focusing on organic growing\, on-farm compost production\, and beneficial insect habitat creation. When not ogling over the micro universes of soil microbes and insects\, they are usually reading Sci-Fi or on the hunt for a sequin outfit. Fianna is running a 2022 Farmer Led Research Trial on beetle banks. \n

DESCRIPTION:There is a growing interest from consumers\, bakers\, and farmers to access heritage grains. Whether that is emmer\, einkorn\, red fife\, spelt\, or wheat\, there are many barriers to bringing these types of grains to the market… starting with seeds! Indeed\, seeds are only available in packet size\, and it can take years to grow and multiply before having a volume large enough to fit into a mechanical seeder or combine. In this session\, you will hear from farmers and researchers who have been working with heritage grains. Rav will share everything from sourcing seed and germination\, to growing tips\, marketing and pricing. Q & A to follow\, so bring all your questions about these beloved crops. \n  \nAbout Rav \nRav (she/her) is a young farmer and climate educator in Mississauga. She runs a food and climate justice organization called Shade of Miti. Rav specializes in growing local and organic bitter melon\, okra\, eggplants and hot peppers. DESCRIPTION:Not only are flowers beautiful to humans and pollinators alike\, but the cut flower sector is experiencing unprecedented growth. This has created a tremendous opportunity for ecological flower seed producers. However\, there is a distinct lack of information on species-specific seed production\, and how to produce quality flower seed. Growers are often stymied by the lack of information about the isolation requirements for different species\, how to collect and clean the seed\, and what to do about low and/or variable germination rates. DESCRIPTION:The Land Access Series is intended to provide practical tools and visionary ideas to support equitable access to land by farmers\, while prioritizing tools and ideas that may reduce barriers for farmers who face increased systemic marginalization. While the root causes of land inaccessibility must be addressed through policy and systemic approaches\, EFAO recognizes that this problem is sticky and complex\, and on-the-ground solutions must be found while larger scale approaches are pursued. EFAO hopes that this series can demonstrate useful models\, practices\, and ways of approaching land access to equip participants with new tools and resources to support their land access journeys. \n  \nAbout this session (French translation to follow below):  \nPlease note Regeneration Canada Members receive FREE access to this session!
