DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again! Time to start shaping your questions and curiosities into research ideas!  \n  \nThe Farmer-Led Research Virtual Workshops are an open space to join fellow farmers\, farmer-researchers\, and research staff to discuss your curiosities and research ideas for the upcoming season.  \n  \nThere will be a short (5 min) presentation about application process for farmer-led research at the beginning of each session\, followed by time for participants to brainstorm\, network\, strategize on ideas\, and learn in community with other farmer-researchers. Farmers and farmer-researchers of all experience levels are welcome.  \n  \nRegistration gives you access to all three workshop sessions. You can attend all three or pick the day that works best for you. \n  \nTuesday\, December 14\, 1-2pm – Soil health\, reduced tillage and cover crops*\nWednesday\, December 15\, 1-2pm – Breeding and seed selection*\nThursday\, December 16\, 1-2pm – Pasture regeneration and livestock*\n  \n*Note that the focus areas for each virtual workshop are only suggested areas of discussion.  All topics are welcome to be discussed in any session.

SUMMARY:Small Grains Meet-Up: Ask a Certified Crop Advisor
DESCRIPTION:Certified Crop Advisors (CCAs) are a great source of information for farmers. They are experts in agronomy and can provide valuable insight and information about on-farm decision-making. \n\nThis June\, we will be joined by Jennifer Doleman\, a farmer\, seed producer and CCA. She brings a wealth of expertise and experience. Come prepared with your most pressing small grain agronomy questions. \n  \nAbout Jenn: \nEnthusiastic farmer\, agronomist\, beekeeper\, environmental steward & mom from the Upper Ottawa Valley. \nA 3rd generation seed producer and farmer\, Jennifer farms with her husband & her parents in Renfrew County\, an hour northwest of Ottawa. Science and sustainability are at the core of their farming practices with an emphasis on farm-based research\, including periodic cooperation in larger-scale research projects with the Ontario Soil & Crop Improvement Association and OMAFRA. \nA proud graduate of the University of Guelph with a degree in Agricultural Science at the University of Guelph\, her studies had an emphasis on agronomy and communications. She is also an independent Ontario Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) with the Nutrient Management Specialty. \nJennifer’s farm boasts a very diverse crop rotation that includes traditional grains and oilseeds\, such as corn\, wheat and soybeans but also barley\, canola\, flax\, oats\, triticale\, peas\, forages & sunflowers. These are grown to support the farm’s several farm-gate value-added streams including a bird feed brand\, honey and beeswax products\, seed production of annual forages and cover crops\, & livestock feed. \nGood soil health is crucial to the farm’s success.  Early adopters of no-till\, reduced tillage practices have been enjoyed for several decades\, to the benefit of soil structure and water quality.  Cover crops & honeybees have been more recent additions to the farm to complement the diverse rotation. \nA graduate of the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (AALP)\, Jennifer believes that collaboration\, strong connections and diversity are the key to a healthy farm\, a healthy community and a healthy economy.   To that end she is very involved in local and provincial organizations that emphasize environmental stewardship\, community and agricultural development.

DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re an experienced seed grower or still working out how to produce seeds commercially\, biennial seed production can feel like “a whole new ballgame.” But never fear: EFAO Seed Program Manager\, Rebecca Ivanoff\, can help demystify this process and share some ideas for how to approach it most efficiently\, while ensuring the viability of your seeds. \n  \nRebecca will share her experience growing carrots\, beets\, cabbage\, and onions for seed. These crops\, which take two years to produce seed\, present some unique challenges and also exciting opportunities. For the first 10 minutes\, Rebecca will share photos and techniques that have worked for her\, leaving lots of time for you to ask questions and share knowledge with others on the call. What biennial crops are you growing for seed or are curious about growing? How can we protect these crops over our cold winters so we can save seed the next year? What plants do you choose to save seed from? Bring your tough questions! Seed Meet-ups also provide information about what kinds of in-depth learning members are looking for. SUMMARY:Small Grains Meet-Up: Growing Small Grains for the First Time
DESCRIPTION:In April\, a diversified field crop farmer and Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) member\, Andy Linder will share his successes and failures with growing oats for the first time. Andy farms with his family in south-central Minnesota and has slowly transitioned their farm to more ecological practices over the past ten years. You can read more about Andy below. \n  \nEFAO’s Small Grains program was inspired by PFI’s Small Grains Program. Since 2016\, PFI has supported the adoption of small grains on over 10\,000 acres across Iowa in just 4 years. \nAbout Andy: \nAndy and his dad\, Don\, farm near Easton\, Minnesota. Together\, they raise corn\, soybeans\, oats\, and grass hay. Their journey to soil health unintentionally started in 2010 when they purchased a vertical tillage machine and ran trials to compare that machine vs. a deep ripper for fall tillage. After a few years of trials they were convinced enough to stop using the ripper and sell it. Then\, in the fall of 2014\, Andy tried his first interseeded cover crop by flying cereal rye into soybeans. After some trials with cover crops and attending more soil health conferences\, he made the decision to stop tilling and cover every acre; and the fall of 2016\, Andy and Don seeded a cover crop on every acre and continue to using cover crop extensively. Currently Andy no tills all of this beans and is trying strip till corn with the goal of going to no-till corn after a few years of building better soil. Andy has recently started a cover crop sales and application business. He does custom hire with a high clearance cover crop seeder and matches customers with other modes of applications.

SUMMARY:Small Grains Meet-Up: Selling Specialty Grain with Max Meighen
DESCRIPTION:With the rise of local food reaching the grain sector\, specialty markets are one way for farmers to get higher prices for their small grains. Marketing specialty grain\, however\, can be daunting. \n  \nTo help demystify selling specialty grain\, Max Meighen of Avling Kitchen and Brewery will join us to share some of the things that end users are considering when buying specialty grain and tips for developing relationships with speciality grain buyers. \n\n\nAbout Max \nMax Meighen\, a former chef and brewer\, started work on Avling in 2015\, upon returning to Canada after a stint working overseas. By embracing the promise and potential of the circular economy\, Alving aims to be so much more than a standard craft brewery. Waste from the brewery and kitchen is redirected to the rooftop farm\, where we grow a wide variety of fruits\, vegetables\, and botanicals\, all of which find their way onto the menu or in one of our beers. Circularity is also realised through our supplier relationships. Winter grains planted by our pork supplier are harvested and sent to local malt houses to be turned into the raw materials for our beer. The Avling gardeners were thrilled to take part in the 2020 Canadian Organic Vegetable Improvement trials administered by the EAFO and we look forward to more farmer lead research on our roof. We all are looking forward to a happier and healthier 2021 and beyond.

Meeting this demand is proving difficult as agri-businesses face numerous challenges including lack of rural broadband\, labour shortages and limited options for processing. Despite these challenges\, many agri-businesses are finding innovative ways to facilitate consumer access to their products\, including leveraging social media\, enhancing local food initiatives\, and launching online stores and e-platforms. \n  \nAs farmers plan for the 2021 growing season\, how can the momentum of local food be further leveraged? Join David Thompson\, Manager of the Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN)\, as we reflect on this past year and identify what is needed to ensure stability and food security in the post-pandemic season. RAIN was part of a research collaborative that identified emerging needs of Northern Ontario agri-businesses and provided support for production\, distribution\, marketing and evidence-informed recommendations. \n  \nThe project has produced preliminary survey results available here. \n  \nPanelists: \n  \nSusan George\, ICT Sector Lead/Program Advisor\, Sault Ste. After attending university\, Chris spent several years in enterprise software sales before ending up at Local Line where puts his experience to work where his passion lies; helping farmers to be more profitable. Chris has helped hundreds of farmers and markets across North America to transition to selling online and successfully save time while growing their business. \n  \nPeggy Baillie\, Co-owner\, Three Forks Farms Manitoulin Island \nPeggy Baillie is the co-owner of Three Forks Farms located in Ice Lake on Manitoulin Island.
