SUMMARY:April Seed Grower Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Greenhouses and hoop houses are turning green with little seedlings that have not only been started off with seed but may also be destined to produce seed for our regional seed system! What seeds are you growing this year that you’ll collect more seed from later this year? This Meet-up offers a place for us to share our seed producing knowledge and to hear about upcoming projects\, webinars\, or workshops you can get involved with. As always\, our goal is to encourage each other to grow a great diversity of seeds of high quality and in the quantities growers need. \n  \nGrowers\, bring your seed questions and areas of contemplation; we’ll work together to try to address as many as we can. And when we find a question we can’t address at the moment\, this is a place to let the Seed Program Manager know so we can arrange further education opportunities.  \n  \nThis Seed Grower Meet-up is hosted monthly for EFAO members. Growers of all experience levels and at all points in the process of seed saving and production are welcome.

SUMMARY:Beneficial Insects & Pest Management Meet-up
DESCRIPTION:Are aphids bugging you (and your crops)? Flea beetles got you down? Join this session\, intended for market and home garden vegetable growers\, to brainstorm ecological solutions to insect pest problems and opportunities to support predatory beneficial insects in your garden planning. Participants will be able to share their questions and ideas and work in groups to create pest management plans for the upcoming season. All experience levels welcome. \n  \nAbout the Facilitator: Fianna Dirks has been working as a farmer for the last 11 years focusing on organic growing\, on-farm compost production\, and beneficial insect habitat creation. When not ogling over the micro universes of soil microbes and insects\, they are usually reading Sci-Fi or on the hunt for a sequin outfit. Fianna is running a 2022 Farmer Led Research Trial on beetle banks. \n

SUMMARY:Getting Started with Rotational Grazing
DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Johnston from Pasture Hill Farm for an interactive Q&A session on his approach to rotational grazing in Northern Ontario. Jim and Wanda Johnston have been raising 100% grass-fed beef and pastured lamb at Pasture Hill Farm in New Liskeard for the past 28 years\, and have a commercial-sized flock of 650 ewes. Before moving to farming full-time\, Jim worked as the Forage and Sheep Researcher at the New Liskeard Agricultural Research Station. \n  \nJim will start the session off by talking about how he manages rotational grazing on his farm\, then we will open the session up for questions and discussion. Please bring your questions about how to approach establishing or expanding a grass-fed beef or sheep operation\, and the principles and practicalities of rotational grazing! \n  \n*Before attending the session\, please take the time to watch this recorded Farm Tour of Pasture Hill Farm\, which showcases Jim and Wanda’s rotational grazing practices. \n  \nMember Month Meet-Ups are free and open to anyone.

SUMMARY:November Seed Grower Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:It’s been great to share knowledge\, laughs\, and skills during our monthly Seed Growers Meetups in late October. This next Meet-Up will be the last this year\, though there will be chances to gather as a seed growers community at the EFAO Conference and during Farmer Led Research Workshops. \n  \nFarmers\, bring your questions and areas of contemplation; we’ll work together to try to address as many as we can. Maybe you have some questions about what seeds you’d like to grow next year? Or about how to best thresh\, dehull\, or winnow a particular crop? Perhaps you want to connect with potential farmers or seed companies for regional breeding projects  in 2022? Perhaps you want to hear about how this year’s breeding projects went and ask questions about ones you want to start next year? This is the place for all of these questions and conversations! \n  \nThis is the seventh Seed Grower Meet Up which we are hosting monthly for EFAO members. Growers of all experience levels and at all points in the process of seed saving and production are welcome. Participants will have the chance to network\, strategize on issues\, and learn with other seed growers.

SUMMARY:Small Grains Meet-Up: Ask a Certified Crop Advisor
DESCRIPTION:Certified Crop Advisors (CCAs) are a great source of information for farmers. They are experts in agronomy and can provide valuable insight and information about on-farm decision-making. \n\nThis June\, we will be joined by Jennifer Doleman\, a farmer\, seed producer and CCA. She brings a wealth of expertise and experience. Come prepared with your most pressing small grain agronomy questions. \n  \nAbout Jenn: \nEnthusiastic farmer\, agronomist\, beekeeper\, environmental steward & mom from the Upper Ottawa Valley. \nA 3rd generation seed producer and farmer\, Jennifer farms with her husband & her parents in Renfrew County\, an hour northwest of Ottawa. Science and sustainability are at the core of their farming practices with an emphasis on farm-based research\, including periodic cooperation in larger-scale research projects with the Ontario Soil & Crop Improvement Association and OMAFRA. \nA proud graduate of the University of Guelph with a degree in Agricultural Science at the University of Guelph\, her studies had an emphasis on agronomy and communications. She is also an independent Ontario Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) with the Nutrient Management Specialty. \nJennifer’s farm boasts a very diverse crop rotation that includes traditional grains and oilseeds\, such as corn\, wheat and soybeans but also barley\, canola\, flax\, oats\, triticale\, peas\, forages & sunflowers. These are grown to support the farm’s several farm-gate value-added streams including a bird feed brand\, honey and beeswax products\, seed production of annual forages and cover crops\, & livestock feed. \nGood soil health is crucial to the farm’s success.  Early adopters of no-till\, reduced tillage practices have been enjoyed for several decades\, to the benefit of soil structure and water quality.  Cover crops & honeybees have been more recent additions to the farm to complement the diverse rotation. \nA graduate of the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (AALP)\, Jennifer believes that collaboration\, strong connections and diversity are the key to a healthy farm\, a healthy community and a healthy economy.   To that end she is very involved in local and provincial organizations that emphasize environmental stewardship\, community and agricultural development.

SUMMARY:Seed Grower Meet Up: Biennial Seed
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re an experienced seed grower or still working out how to produce seeds commercially\, biennial seed production can feel like “a whole new ballgame.” But never fear: EFAO Seed Program Manager\, Rebecca Ivanoff\, can help demystify this process and share some ideas for how to approach it most efficiently\, while ensuring the viability of your seeds. \n  \nRebecca will share her experience growing carrots\, beets\, cabbage\, and onions for seed. These crops\, which take two years to produce seed\, present some unique challenges and also exciting opportunities. For the first 10 minutes\, Rebecca will share photos and techniques that have worked for her\, leaving lots of time for you to ask questions and share knowledge with others on the call. What biennial crops are you growing for seed or are curious about growing? How can we protect these crops over our cold winters so we can save seed the next year? What plants do you choose to save seed from? Bring your tough questions! Seed Meet-ups also provide information about what kinds of in-depth learning members are looking for. If the group can’t answer your question during this session\, EFAO can look for expert speakers who can answer it at an upcoming workshop. \n  \nThis is the third Seed Grower Meet-up\, which occur monthly for EFAO members. Growers of all experience levels and at all points in the process of seed saving and production are welcome. Participants will have the chance to network\, strategize on issues\, and learn with other seed growers.
